Project part #4 Prototyping & Evaluation

Introduction

  In this phase 4, we are testing our prototype by letting the user experience them based on the task given to them. By doing the user testing process, we would be able to improvise our product as well as making the product more user-friendly. The user-testing involve 5 different users going through 3 similar tasks to test the usability as well as the functionality of the interface.

Testing with users

Task 1 - Sort the trash using smart trash bin

Task 2 - Alert users when the trash bin is full

Task 3 - Request to recycle paper to the nearest location

Briefing notes

Hi! We are from team Thrasher. Today we would like to test our functional prototype. Here we have two functional prototypes which are the smart trash bin and the app called ‘Recircle’. Recycling is a good way to keep our environment safe and clean. So, you as a user has 3 tasks to do which is first is to sort the trash, second is to alert the trash when it is full and third is to request to recycle paper to the nearest location. The first task is using the smart trash bin prototype while the other two are using the app. You may click on anything you see on the app. If it is out of control we will show “Sorry on maintenance” screen which will pop-up to you. We also included those 3 folded papers which are written according to its waste such as paper, glass and aluminum. You may begin.

Observations

Based on our observations on the 3 tasks carried out, users usually will randomly click on the icon on the bottom of the homepage. They want to know what the function of the icon is instead of just straight do the tasks given. The tasks were not done smoothly by users but some of them can recognise the button/icon. Also, on the navigation page where the search bar is not seen by the user as a search bar to click on it and to search any nearest location for the trash bin located. Also, the buttons on the prototype are not being pressed instead they will just throw away the sorted trash on top of the lid and not in the trash bin.

Many users give feedback on the unreadable/unrecognizable icon whereas they say it is not a familiar icon as they see daily in famous apps. Based on user's feedback, user 1,3 and 4 says that it needs improvement on the icons on the homepage where the icons are quite confusing to use at first. User 2 says that the app needs some more repeating page where it can be handle easily and also user-friendly. And some of the users also have difficulties on searching the nearest location using the search bar.

Findings

{Usabilty Problem that you discovered from the testing, and possible solution}

  Based on the user testing that was conducted, we found out that some of the users were unable to comprehend the icon that we have used in the product. This is the major problem that we found out that needs some solution. Here are the three findings based on our observations.

The first usability problem that we discovered is the icon bar on the bottom of the homepage seems too difficult to recognise and differentiate. This is a major problem for the user to use the app. So, we added some description on the bottom of each icon to make it more recognisable. The user will easily identify each of the icons by reading the name instead of trying to understand what the icons are.

Next, we discovered that the search bar on the navigation app seems useless. Its existence looks like the title of the page. So, we add some blur names and recommended locations based on their location inside the search bar. Also, we are considering adding autocomplete searching where users may look up easily the location that they desire.This will make the search bar more user-friendly.

Lastly,  the button on the prototype which opens up the trash bin lid is not being pressed instead users try to open up the lid manually. Some of the users see the button just as a decoration. So, we have enlarged the button and put a ‘PUSH HERE’ description on each button to make it more pressable and more attractive.
